WMI repository on the computer is brokenAnswered

We've seen a couple of these errors recently.
Performing tests on the WMI shows no issues.
Same with drivers, etc.
Just looking for any hints as to where else to look.
We are convinced this is an issue with the customer's PC, but so far have been unable to locate the problem.

Start with using the latest version of TurboActivate (5.0.2), if that fixes it, stop there, if not, we have a FAQ covering this very error: https://wyday.com/limelm/help/faq/#fix-broken-wmi

Ok, why does https://wyday.com/limelm/api/ta-changes/ show an older release as being the latest, and why are there no dates with the releases so we can keep an eye on them?
And does v5.0.2 have a specific fix for this issue?
Hard to know, as I can find no release notes other than for the veru old v4.4.4.1 Oct. 2021 release…
What am I missing?

It's covered here: https://wyday.com/blog/2024/2024-a-year-of-behind-the-scenes-progress/

And multiple times on the forum already.

5.0 for unix (linux, bsd, mac) will be out soon. We released 5.0 for Windows first to workaround broken drivers.

While all very good, doesn't really answer the question about knowing what is in new updates, and what issues they fix, as well as not helping to know when they are released.
Can we sign-up to be notified of new releases for a specific OS?

From https://wyday.com/blog/2024/2024-a-year-of-behind-the-scenes-progress/ :

  • TA / TF / TFS 5.0 releases for Windows: We’ve released TurboActivate, TurboFloat, and TurboFloat Server 5.0 for Windows. We’ve released it early (before the Unix builds are finished) to work around broken network drivers that Intel and Qualcomm have been releasing lately. Get them now on your API page.

We’ll release the Unix builds of TA/TF/TFS soon and we’ll have the updated changelog and blog post announcing it when it’s done.

So, as I stated above, the big notable changes are workarounds for broken drivers. Will this “fix” the WMI issue? Maybe. Update TA, update the drivers, if you still get the error, follow the FAQ.

Unfortunately, just repeating yourself really doesn't help.

I've answered your questions: this likely fixes the problem, if not the rest of the FAQ does. Updating TA is step 1 of the FAQ for a reason. It's also only the first step because there are lots of ways drivers & users can mess up their computer, hence the rest of the FAQ to get the user's computer into a working state.

We'll have a full changelog when 5.0 is released for all platforms. Addressed in the blog and multiple times on the forum.

To be notified of when 5.0 is released for the other platforms, again the blog says that they'll be a new post about it. I quoted that section directly. So…. subscribe to the RSS feed. You'll be notified when the new post goes up.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, do you have any other way of communicating news updates? These days I don't know anyone that still uses RSS feeds… Personally I'd much prefer just getting an email!

We do plan on sending email notices for new TA / TF releases. However, the problem with email is that people don't necessarily get their emails. A shocking number of our customers purchase receipts gets bounced back or get trapped in spam.

Which is why sending emails for new releases is not a priority for us (because a majority of users wouldn't even get eyeballs on that hard work), and because RSS is a significantly more reliable transmission method. Why? Because you opt-in to the RSS feeds you want. And our hosting is rock-solid (we've been doing this for around two decades). There are no middle-men deciding whether you get to see what we post.

So, I'd say get yourself an RSS reader that you plan on checking. For iOS / macOS I'd recommend NetNewsWire: https://netnewswire.com/

Thunderbird does it if you don't have an iOS mobile device. But there are literally thousands of them.

Yes, RSS is old tech. But it's simple. And it works.
