wyUpdate stuck in endless open/close loopSolved

I haven't been able to test this issue further, however it seems that with UAC turned completely off on Windows 7, running wyUpdate as a standard user will result it an endless loop of it opening and closing.

After an update had been downloaded and the app restarted, wyUpdate launched normally. It got to the "Extracting files" stage, quit and almost immediately launched itself again. It happened so quickly that I coulnd't end the process through normal methods - by the time I could click on wyUpdate.exe in the task manager and hit End process, it had closed and launched itself again. The only way I could get it to stop was to quickly log off and log on again.

I tested on another Win 7 PC as a standard user and the update performed as expected. After some thought, I checked the UAC settings on the problem PC and found that UAC was set to Off. On the working PC, it was set to the default setting. Changing this back to any setting other than Off fixed the issue, and the update performed as expected.

Is this a known issue? If not, could some sort of notification be added so that when UAC is off and admin privileges are required, the user is notified before wyUpdate is terminated?

Yes, this is a known problem when using the AutomaticUpdater, on a limited user account, with UAC completely turned off. It's fixed in 2.6.15 out soon.

Thank you for the response - glad to see that it is a known issue that has already been fixed.

Side note: I am really liking how easy and efficient wyBuild / wyUpdate makes keeping users up to date. I will definitely be incorporating it into other apps as well as recommending it whenever I can 🙂

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. 😀

Any news on 2.6.15?

2.6.14 is 7 months old.

Sorry -- the delays can be frustrating, I know. We should have planned the releases better and done several bite-size releases instead of a larger release. Lesson learned.

We've run into an issue where the AutomaitcUpdater has some odd behavior in Services (e.g. UpdateSuccessful not being called under certain conditions). We want to get that fixed before 2.6.15.

Thanks for the update. Rather you find the bugs in testing than just release.

I know, it's always a tradeoff how much to put in a release.

Good luck!

Hi,

I have the same problem when I click No on UAC elevations, it goes into a loop until I click Yes and install the update. Also I have the wyUpdate version from december 16, 2011.

When I log the error this is what I get on AutomaticUpdaterUpdateFailed :

"Update failed to install. Operation was cancelled by the user."

Thanks

We didn't release wyUpdate with this fix in it yet. It's coming with 2.6.15.

The error "Update failed to install. Operation was cancelled by the user" is what you should expect when the user cancels the UAC dialog.

Thanks for the answer,

for the version, it was my bad, it was the version of AutomaticUpdater.dll from december 16 not wyUpdate.exe, got mixed up this morning 😳

Any news or ETA on 2.6.15?

It's coming -- we're working with the private beta testers to make this a very stable release.

Looking forward to it!

We're due to release an update and would like to bypass this endless wyUpdate open/close bug.

wyBuild 2.6.16 is now out -- this bug is fixed.
