Systa process ends before responding to IsGenuineExAnswered

Subject: Systa process ends before responding to IsGenuineEx() – Windows / Adobe AIR

Hi Wyatt,

We're experiencing an issue with Hitmix Bingo, our Adobe AIR application that uses LimeLM for software licensing.

A customer was using the software perfectly on Sunday, 1 November, but on Monday, 2 November, it suddenly stopped working. Every time they launch the application, they receive the following error:

Error: The systa process ended before the response could be delivered.

The application hasn't been changed between Sunday and Monday, and the customer hasn't reported making any changes to their computer.

Software versions

  • Hitmix Bingo: 11.60
  • Adobe AIR application running on Windows
  • Systa: 4.4.0.0
  • TurboActivate library: 5.0.2.0

Application log

We've enabled logging and confirmed that the error occurs immediately during the initial licensing check:

inside applicationComplete(), STARTING HITMIX
inside getCurrentVersion(), version number = 11.60
inside applicationComplete(), ta.IsGenuineEx(30,7,false);
inside onIsGenuineEx(), returned value evt.ErrorObj = Error: The systa process ended before the response could be delivered. and evt.uintResponse = 0
inside onIsGenuineEx(), licenseDialogue shown with isActivated set to false because evt.ErrorObj != null.

Troubleshooting already performed

We've spent some time investigating the customer's computer and have established the following:

  1. Systa launches successfully. Using PowerShell and Microsoft Process Monitor, we confirmed that Hitmix Bingo launches systa.exe from its installation directory.
  2. Systa exits with status 0. Process Monitor confirms that the process terminates with exit status 0, rather than an obvious crash code. However, Hitmix Bingo never receives the expected response.
  3. Systa runs manually. Executing systa.exe directly in PowerShell successfully displays the Systa and TurboActivate version information.
  4. All licensing files are present. We've confirmed that systa.exe, TurboActivate.dll and TurboActivate.dat exist in the application's Windows directory.
  5. No antivirus interference identified. Windows Defender's Protection History is empty, and we haven't found evidence of Systa being blocked.
  6. No Windows application crashes recorded. Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor show no relevant Systa or Hitmix Bingo crashes.
  7. Administrator privileges make no difference. Running Hitmix Bingo as administrator produces exactly the same error.
  8. WMI appears operational. Windows successfully retrieves network adapter information and MAC addresses.
  9. System date and time are correct. We also started Windows Time Service and successfully synchronised the computer with Microsoft's time server, without resolving the problem.
  10. Software update attempted. We installed an updated copy of Hitmix Bingo after the problem began, but the error persists.

Questions

Given that Systa launches successfully and exits with status 0, but never returns a response to IsGenuineEx(), can you suggest what might be causing this?

In particular:

  • Are there known circumstances in which Systa terminates normally without returning a licensing response?
  • Could a problem with the customer's locally stored activation data cause this behaviour?
  • Is there any additional diagnostic logging we can enable within Systa or TurboActivate to identify why the process exits?
  • Is there a safe way to repair the customer's licensing installation without deactivating their existing licence?

The most puzzling aspect is that the application was working normally one day and stopped the next, without any known changes to the software.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as we're keen to get the customer working again without unnecessarily resetting their licence.

Many thanks,

Nick Burrett

It's hard to know. I'd say start by using the latest versions and go from there. Using old versions have bugs that we've since fixed and it's not worth anyone's time to dig into.

If you're still getting unusual behavior from the latest versions (of systa and TurboActivate) then we'll dig into it more.

Subject: Systa exits before responding – still occurring with latest version 26.0.2.0 (Adobe AIR)

Hi Wyatt,

Following your suggestion, I've now updated both Systa and TurboActivate to the latest versions, but unfortunately the problem persists.

Running systa.exe directly in PowerShell confirms:

systa (NodeJS / Adobe AIR helper process) version: 26.0.2.0
TurboActivate library version: 26.0.2.0

The problem

Our Adobe AIR application, Hitmix Bingo, was working perfectly for this customer on Sunday, 1 November, but suddenly stopped working on Monday, 2 November, without any changes to the application.

The error appears immediately on startup:

The systa process ended before the response could be delivered.

We've enabled application logging and confirmed that the initial licensing check fails:

inside applicationComplete(), ta.IsGenuineEx(30,7,false);
inside onIsGenuineEx(), returned value
evt.ErrorObj = Error: The systa process ended
before the response could be delivered.
and evt.uintResponse = 0

We've also tried manually entering the customer's product key, but CheckAndSavePKey() produces exactly the same error.

Troubleshooting completed

  • Updated both Systa and TurboActivate to version 26.0.2.0.
  • Confirmed that Systa launches successfully from the application.
  • Used Microsoft Process Monitor to establish that Systa exits with status 0, rather than crashing.
  • Confirmed that all required licensing files are present.
  • Checked Windows Defender, Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor without finding any relevant crashes or security blocks.
  • Tried running the application as administrator.
  • Verified WMI functionality and Windows time synchronisation.
  • Reinstalled/updated the application without success.

One complication

Unfortunately, the developer who originally created Hitmix Bingo is no longer working with us, and we don't have access to the original ActionScript source code.

We do have the compiled SWF and can replace the Systa and TurboActivate binaries, but modifying the ActionScript licensing integration would be difficult.

My questions are:

  1. Given that Systa exits with status 0 but fails to respond to both IsGenuineEx() and CheckAndSavePKey(), what could be causing this?
  2. Is there a way to enable additional diagnostic logging directly within Systa to identify why it terminates?
  3. Could corrupted locally stored activation data cause this behaviour, and is there a safe way to investigate without losing the customer's activation?
  4. Are the latest Systa and TurboActivate binaries backward compatible with older Adobe AIR/ActionScript integrations?

As we've now updated both components to the latest versions and the issue remains, I'd really appreciate any further guidance.

Many thanks,

Nick

Hi Wyatt,

Good news — we've finally managed to resolve the problem, and it appears to have been caused by a recent Windows update.

The customer's computer had installed KB5127936 on 1 November 2026. Hitmix Bingo stopped working the following day, with the error:

The systa process ended before the response could be delivered.

After exhausting numerous troubleshooting steps, including updating both Systa and TurboActivate to version 26.0.2.0, we uninstalled KB5127936.

Hitmix Bingo immediately started working again.

Many thanks,
Nick

Answer

Two cases now, both fixed by uninstalling KB5127936

Nice. Weird that routine update would muck up fairly basic IPC.

Must be all the AI slop MS has been shoving in their code.

You should probably get a copy of your source code so you can maintain it.
