Losing activation

We have two applicaitions that run with Lime and both work well. However, on some occasions when a user has not used the software for a while, when they next use it, the program is unactivated and they get the expired trial message. Reactivating sorts it out but why does it happen?

There's not enough information to tell you. My guess is the customer's computer changed. Or maybe they're on a virtual machine and the underlying hardware changed (which is why we recommend using TurboFloat for virtual machines).
