This problem is already fixed in the subversion tree of our code. We just haven't released a new version of wyBuild between then and now and thus no new pre-compiled wyUpdate (yet). You can always build wyUpdate from source and get the latest fixes.

It is now January and I too now find myself standing in the same gopher hole after several hours of head scratching.
When can we expect a fix for this problem?
SteveCI can obviously work around the problem but my only concern is that if I do that, then when the fixed wyUpdate is released, then my app will become broken.
Do my copies of wyUpdate.exe in the field update themselves automatically?

No, wyUpdate self-updates it will overwrite your compiled version with ours (so long as you don't host self-updates on your own site).
