I'd like to know why I get this error message before I have had the opportunity to enter a product key?
The product key has VM enabled, but I can't enter it because of this error.

First, use the latest version. Currently that's 4.4.4.1.

Because you're using verified trials? Hard to know. It depends on how you programmed things. Function needed, return codes, etc.
Sorry, we assumed the duplicate topic was an error on your part. I just deleted the same topic, and if you have any questions you can continue it here.
If you're using the TurboActivate Wizard, and you're on a VM, it will stop you early because by default verified trials are not allowed on VMs.
So, either don't use the TurboActivate Wizard (write your own interface) OR enable VM activations for the entire product version in LimeLM.
