wyUpdate crashes (0x000007b)

We are seeing increasing number of wyUpdate crashes with error 0x000007b.

What does this mean and how do we fix it?

Hey Andy,

Someone else reported something similar but we could never reproduce it, and never heard back from the user so we assumed they fixed the problem. Here are the questions we asked but never got answers to: wyUpdate fails (0x0000007b). Answer those questions and we'll be able to help you.

My guess: your customers don't have .NET Framework installed. See: Requirements for wyUpdate.

Are you installing the .NET Framework alongside your app? Or at least checking it's installed?

Hi Wyatt,

Thanks for the help. We get this report from many (around 18) customers, but we don't have physical access to their computer, so we can't perform all the debug steps you asked.

I know it is hard, but you guys know the internals of wyUpdate and what the 7b error means.

Here are the answers. Are you using a custom version of wyUpdate?no What version of wyUpdate are you using?2.6.18.4 What version of Windows are you using?XP SP3, Vista and Win7 x32 and x64 Can you reproduce this on other computers?no, but we have many reports of it What happens when you double click wyUpdate.exe, do you get this error?cannot say. We'll ask the customers. Right click wyUpdate.exe, click Properties, is wyUpdate digitally signed? If not, then you've got a corrupt version of wyUpdate. Only use our version of wyUpdate. We don't support custom versions of wyUpdate. It is the standard version from your website or when it auto-updated itself. Do you have the .Net Framework Installed? If so, which versions?Yes, 3.51 is installed with our app.

This is not an internal wyUpdate error. It's a system error (i.e. an error in Windows that says it can't start wyUpdate).

See if one of these customers is free so we can do a remote debug to see what's happening.
