I have wyUpdate, but never installed itLocked

Hello.

I was looking around my PC and noticed I had a folder named wyUpdate AU in the roaming folder in AppData.

Not knowing what it was, I looked it up, leading me to a bunch of virus support fourms on various websites, and here. I have never installed this software (intentionally, at least), or even heard of it or this company.

Based on the wording on the product page, I'm interpreting it as some sort of malware. ("You can silently check for updates to GUI apps and silently update Windows Services.").

The Pirate Poacher tool sounds, to be blunt, like utter nonsense, as well as like bombing an entire forest to kill a rabbit.

Can you please explain to me what this wyUpdate really does, how I may have aqcuried it, and such?

wyUpdate is open source. This means that sometimes our customer build their own custom versions. But unfortunately they don't always cryptographically sign their custom build, and thus crummy anti-virus software incorrectly detects wyUpdate as a virus.

wyUpdate isn't a virus, obviously (see the source code if you have doubts). And the anti-virus programs don't have this problem when wyUpdate is properly cryptographically signed (Authenticode signature).

Our customers are other software companies that want to add updating to their software. See: wyBuild.

It's not.

Being open source, wouldn't that mean that it'd be possible for it to be adapted for malicious purposes, though.

But there's no way to tell what caused it to be installed? Do you guys keep a list that can be disclosed?

It's not.

It seems somone already brought up how I feel in that fourm section 😉 I don't and have not pirated anything (In retrospect, I kinda wish I did, so much money I could have saved), but I respect that people put their time and effort into products, and even if I think the system in which modern software is developed and published, I won't bypass it.

That said, i'm accutly aware that the issue has aspects that reach into areas of the law that MAY affect me, even if it shouldn't.

And you can use a steak knife to kill someone. But most people use it for its primary purpose of cutting steak.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking for a list of companies that do business with us? We don't disclose that, obviously.

Not in that way, but if I were to list the software I have installed, could you just give a yes/no if I own one that uses it, without specifying which one it is?

Also, there seems to be an issue with BBcode 🙄

We disabled it for everyone but site admins (phpBB is a honeypot for spam and we haven't had time to fix the many glaring problems with it).

No, I can't. Not because I don't want to, but because it's next to impossible. Search your program files for AutomaticUpdater.dll. If you see that file then the app probably uses wyUpdate.
