I have had the updater working (once) but dont know what I am doing wrong
The updater detects that a new version of my software is available ... takes me to the Update informationwindow listing all my changes .... when I try to download my updated version it returns a failed signature validation - Verification failed error message
Any help would be much appreciated

Hey George,
See What does "failed signature validation" mean?. If I were to guess I'd say (a) either you used a separate wyBuild project to build your updates than to build wyUpdate or (b) you built an update but only uploaded the *.wys and not the *.wyu files (or vice versa).
